CHAPTER 16

THE LIES OF AMALIA

Serene, Implacatus – 12th Tuminch 5255

‘Well?’ said Amalia.

Karalyn severed the connection to her dream powers. ‘Soldiers are still searching the apartment. There’s no sign of Sable or Cardova, or of Austin and his family.’

Amalia paced up and down the room. She paused by the open window, and glanced out at the clouds.

‘They were looking for you,’ Karalyn said.

‘I’d guessed that,’ said Amalia. ‘Silva, or someone with similar powers, must have informed the gods that I had arrived in Implacatus. If I have endangered Belinda by my presence, I shall never forgive myself.’

Karalyn sat down onto the floor of the bare room. ‘We should have realised that you would be valuable to the gods. Not just as a rebel, but as someone who knows the location of the Salve City. It’s no wonder that they’re looking for you.’

‘And you’re sure they won’t be able to find me again?’

‘Aye. I’m smothering your self-healing powers. No one will be able to detect you.’

‘Should we turn back?’ said Amalia. ‘If we cross over into Cumulus, it will be too late to retreat. This is the only chance we have to slip away.’

‘We can’t turn back. We’ll just have to adjust our plan. We’re going to have to assume that Sable transported the others to safety when the soldiers raided the apartment, and carry on without them.’

Amalia lowered her glance. ‘If we plan to keep going, then we have but one option – I should surrender myself willingly to the authorities; and then you can rescue Belinda while the gods are occupied with my interrogation. I assume that you have hidden my knowledge of how to travel to the City?’

‘The Salve City? Aye. I’ve buried that knowledge behind impenetrable barriers. It’s not good enough, though, is it? They won’t believe that you have no memories of how to travel to the Salve City. It’ll only make them more suspicious. This is something else I’ll have to fix. Tell me – did you originally arrive in Salve City on your own?’

‘No. I came with Malik, my husband, who was also a rebel at the time. We each had our own Quadrants; we needed two in order to open up a portal.’

‘Why did you need to open a portal?’

‘So that we could introduce greenhides into the world of the City. Don’t look at me like that. We had a perfectly rational reason for doing so, or at least we thought we did at the time. As I’m sure you know, it didn’t turn out the way we had planned. We lost control of the greenhides, and they ran wild, spreading across the world with lightning speed.’

Karalyn glared at the former God-Queen. ‘Were there other cities on that world before you unleashed legions of greenhides upon it?’

‘No. There were no cities whatsoever. But, there were scattered communities of hunters, and a few villages where farming had commenced. Where the City now stands, there was only a small collection of walled towns – Tara, Pella, Ooste and Dalrig.
